Birth Story 2

We got to a week over baby’s “guess date” and had spent a full day at the Ultrasound place and then the Doctor’s office (with a stop at the mall & playground in between, to satisfy Mommy’s veggie burrito craving and help Trinity’s restlessness in waiting rooms) to have them tell us all was good. Due to a pre-existing blood pressure condition, I was sadly unable to go with midwifery care.

Since our daughter’s birth (three and a half years prior) was two weeks “late”, we weren’t overly concerned and even more determined this time not to be bullied into any kind of intervention by the medical system.

I wanted this baby to come as naturally as possible, and on his/her own time. I agreed to a hospital birth, to have the extra security of “just in case”. We had had a great team of nurses last time and a wonderful doula and were anticipating a similar experience this time (minus the castor oil- a last resort move which actually ended up working beautifully).

I spent the weeks leading up to the end of the pregnancy taking really good care of myself, going from acupuncture to chiro, massage, trying out Bowen and Craniosacral healing modalities and attending weekly prenatal yoga classes. Chasing after our 3 1/2 year old had me staying pretty active but other than the occasional walk I wasn’t doing much in terms of “regular” exercise.

I read tons of positive birth stories and watched some youtube videos on water and hypno births and started listening to my hypnobirthing meditations. I spent some much needed time (thanks to Grandparents) in solitude and in nature when I could, enjoying just “being” and breathing. Staying grounded, centered and at peace and in a continual state of gratitude was my priority. My nesting energy had come and gone over the past few weeks and although I still had some actual cleaning left on the list, I was enormously satisfied to have completed my “office project”.

So I felt pretty well prepared when the contractions (or “rushes” as I preferred to call them) began in earnest around 3:30 am that very night. We had spent some time out in the backyard in the gorgeous sunny early evening light and I enjoyed laying in the grass, watching the gently drifting clouds and listening to my daughter’s delighted shrieks as she ran through the sprinkler. My braxton hicks had begun turning more cramp-like and I felt a growing excitement that this might be it... we were finally going to meet the newest member of our family, and soon!

After experiencing two rushes in the time it took to get my daughter settled back in to bed (she and I are very connected on an emotional level and I’m sure she was sensing the changes that the beginning of my labour was bringing on) I tried to get back into bed to rest as much as possible for what my body would be accomplishing this beautiful day. But after about an hour I gave up as the rushes were getting quite intense and I was feeling the need to move around. I was so glad that I had gotten my hubby to download the “full term” app onto his phone and I began timing them.

They were coming extremely regularly- 3-5 minutes apart and lasting 30 seconds each. As soon as one began, I would stop whatever I was doing, breathe and circle my hips. This made the pain disappear, usually by halfway through the “squeeze”. For the next hour, I flitted around, filling water bottles, preparing my daughter’s overnight bag for her grandparents house and thinking about how wonderful it was going to be to finally hold our new baby in my arms.

By 5:30 I made a call to my mom and sent a text to my doula to let them know it was time. By 6:30, mom was there and I had woken both Trinity and my husband and things were in motion.

We soon left for the hospital, happily avoiding any morning traffic. I was really pleased with how things were progressing and was hoping to breeze through triage and get set up in a labour room to create my “cocoon” continue with my labouring/opening up. However the hospital staff had other ideas and I was made to wait 2 1/2 hours in a tiny, curtained off area, with my doula waiting outside. At least I had a window and sunshine! I knew they would need to have me on the monitor for a while to check baby’s heart beat and the intensity of my rushes.

When I was checked internally it was determined that I was 3 cm dilated. There was a malfunction on the monitoring machine (it wasn’t picking up the rushes) so I had to wait a little longer until they had the reading that they wanted. Then they discovered that the baby’s heart rate was dropping at each contraction, so they told me that I was going to have to keep the monitor on. Luckily, I was still able to move around and they even brought me a birthing ball, which I put up on the bed and leaned on for support during the rushes, which were getting more and more intense. I had started a low moaning (still circling my hips as much as possible) during the rushes, then relaxed back onto my knees on a pillow (moving the ball to the floor) in between. My husband was sent down to admit me and when he returned I found myself releasing some tears, so relieved that he was back.

I think the tears prompted the nurses get the Doctor to check on my progress, and much to everyone’s surprise in just two hours I was already at 8 cm!! I’ll never forget the Doctor’s reaction as she said with a look of shock “this can’t be for real- we need to get her in a room, NOW!”

The next hour was spent settling into the room, finally united with my doula and meeting our sweet nurse. I had my comfort measures set up- my special blend of aromatherapy massage oil, music and bag of crystals. Relief was huge when I stepped into the shower and knelt with the hot water pouring down my back. The counter pressure on my sacrum also felt really good. Then I was told that I was pretty much fully dilated and that it was time to move to the bed. They were having a tough time keeping the monitoring going on baby’s heart rate in the shower.

The heart rate being A-typical was a concern and the head of OB was called in for a consult. I noticed the room getting fuller and fuller of personnel and was having a harder time concentrating on and coping with the rushes. It was at this point that I remembered and started using the laughing gas to help me get through them. The nurse and my doula were great, explaining to me everything that was going on as it happened. They then needed to first break my water and attach a monitor directly to baby’s head.

The amount of meconium in the water (which released in a big gush, causing a feeling of relief but also huge pressure) stepped the panic mode into even higher gear and all of the sudden there were even more people in and out of the room and talk of possibly moving me to surgery. Then, an imposing figure appeared at the end of the bed. “Who are you?” I blurted out, but was ignored. Apparently the chief head of OB doesn’t answer such questions.

The original Doctor kept commenting on how stubborn my cervix was being- apparently there was still a lip that kept showing up. She tried holding it back and having me push but it just wasn’t working. There was a sense of urgency to get the baby out, now. The second doctor also tried holding the remaining cervix out of the way, which unfortunately wasn’t working either. This is when the talk of using the vacuum was brought up and I understood that it was necessary- especially if I wanted to avoid being sent for a Caesarian. I think at this point the anesthesiologist appeared and someone began trying to get an IV started. I was given some fentanyl (which I made sure wouldn’t pass into my breast milk before agreeing to it) and then it was time.

The vacuum was used once during a pushing phase and we were able to get the baby’s head to descend past the cervix and come out. It was then that they noticed that the cord was wrapped around the baby's neck very tightly three times and they immediately clamped and cut it. THAT was the problem- not my “incompetent” cervix!! Every time the baby’s head was trying to descend, the cord was getting in the way, tilting the head to the side and blocking the passage. Once the cord was released and cut, the next push had the body delivered. What a release and relief and incredible sensation to feel the slippery body slither through!

Tears of relief were shared along with the news that we had a BOY!! I apologized to the room in advance but felt the undeniable need to shout out “It’s a f*&%^ing BOY!!”

He was immediately surrounded by the staff who suctioned and assessed him while the Doctor assisted me in delivering the placenta. The baby needed to be transferred to the NICU for further assessment and then the Doctor noticed a large amount of blood coming from me. After some freezing, more pain meds and some stitching to a tear above my urethra (ouch), he went in to try and see if the bleeding was coming from a cervical tear. There was talk of possibly having to send me for surgery but then it was decided that we would wait and let it heal on its own.

Meanwhile my husband was back and forth to the NICU, giving me updates and showing me photos of our baby boy. It was an extremely intense time of very high emotions and I am so thankful for the support and calm coming from my doula and the nurse. They kept me in the delivery room and the baby in the NICU for the next 4 hours, and then came the best news of all- baby had been released and was on his way to me!

He had recovered quickly, regaining his pink colour all over and his breathing was much better. They didn’t have to use any oxygen or start antibiotics or a feeding tube either. We were finally reunited and what a sweet relief to get to hold and nurse him. We then transferred over to the recovery ward, saying goodbye and thanks to the fantastic team of professionals who had helped me to get my baby out, safely and soundly.

So although I didn’t get the delivery of my dreams, I still felt that the wishes on my birth plan were respected as much as possible and the outcome was the best it could have been: a happy and healthy mom and baby.

Welcome Baby Granola Bars

I love to bake. And add my own ingredients based on what I find in the baking cupboard...

The following is adapted from a recipe on the Rogers Porridge Oats (with Oat Bran, wheat bran and flaxseed) package for "Porridge Oats Breakfast Cookies" but instead of two dozen cookies I have made bars in a 9 x 13 inch pan. And added a few things...

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 salt
1/2 tsp allspice
2 tsp each cinnamon & ginger
( for spices I used "Lebkuchengewuertz" - German gingerbread spices as well as Epicure's Apple Pie Spice & Tropical Fruit Dip Mix)
2 eggs
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 1/4 cups unsweetened apple sauce
1 tbsp. grated orange rind (I added the juice from half the orange too, and a splash of Cointreau)
2 tsp. vanilla
3 cups Porridge Oats (I used 2 cups and substituted 1 cup of shredded coconut)
3/4 cup chopped almonds
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup driend cranberries
(I substituted 2 cups of trail mix: sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, raisins & goji berries)

and I also added 1/2 cup cocoa powder & 1/2 cup chocolate chips because I am a chocoholic.

Preheat oven to 350F.

Combine flour, baking soda, salt, spices, stir well and set aside.

Place eggs, vegetable oil, applesauce and brown sugar in a large bowl and beat together well. Add orange rind, vanilla, nuts, berries (and chocolate chips, if using) and stir until well combined. Add flour mixture and stir well.

Either use 1/4 cup batter per cookie (and flatten to 9 cm diameter with a folk) or spread into greased cake pan. Bake for 15 - 20 minutes.

Things are beginning to explode into bloom, all around.

Today, Lindsay Ross of Babes in Arms came to visit and brought two overflowing baskets of natural toys with her.

We talked about the difference in natural and mass-produced-plastic-stuff-a-la-T-Rus and it was quite eye-opening to hear.

She has generously provided PDF with all kinds of very pertinent info to share with you (which plastics you definitely need to avoid, the contents and consequences of the hazardous materials and a list of local stores which sell all natual, non-toxic toys plus links galore to do your own research).

What a great resource to have, especially this time of the year... Now if we could only get all those aunties, uncles and grandparents to read it!

On being overwhelmed

On Being Overwhelmed

Whoooooa!

What a ride the past year and a half have been.

Crazy, wild, enriching in every way... and not without its challenges.

The process of becoming a parent is a rollercoaster ride of events, decisions, compromises (in some cases), education and fun!

To add to the excitement I have also started this business, in roughly the same amount of time. Whether out of the necessity to satisy my monkey-brained/Gemini tendencies or to stay true to my family's strong entrepreneurial roots we're not sure yet.

The business (and what I'm aspiring to become my livelihood at some point) is what is keeing me inspired. To truly express my individual and unique gifts and share them with others.

Goddess Mommies was 'born' around the same time as my daughter, TLC (yes those really are her initals) and was a natural progression and addition to the Goddess Group of Calgary which I started three years previous.

Bringing together incredible, loving, kind, like-minded, strong and nurturing women to connect, network and build a community.

The other part of my business includes the two natural healing modalities I am currently in the process of mastering: Reflexology and Flower Essences.

I am full of excitement and cheerful anticipation at what this next phase of my life is going to bring. I know that Spirit is leading me in this direction and life's purpose.
All I really have to do is stop, open up and listen.

The first one is very close to my heart indeed, as we had the chance to try out the Calgary Childrens Hospital up close and personal for the very first time this past weekend. The Emerg. was awesome and took such good care of us! (and Trin is fine now, finally over that nasty flu virus)

Some of you will remember the visit from Erin of xerion last fall, when she brought me that t-shirt that said "Chicken Pox Survivor" on the back (which I then proudly wore to the breastfeeding challenge at Eau Claire!)

Well, she's back again and eager to discuss such topics as Children & Homeopathy and alternative (all natural) ways to help your kids deal with teething & cold/flu. Ways to reverse Vaccine damage will also be covered. It's going to be a casual talk with lots of time for any questions you might have.

It's an extremely baby friendly atmosphere, with lots of toys, a change table, quiet/nursing room and snacks/coffee/tea.

Supporting a cause

The "Young Moms Doula Support Group" is partly run by Deb McFarlane, who is one of the city's longest practicing Post Partum Doulas.

Their aim is to give a hand up to young single moms who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their children.

One such mom is Amanda, who is looking to start a Prenatal Instructor course in January. She has no family besides her 8 month old baby, and they live at a home for unwed mothers, where all of their living expenses are taken care of. At the moment, the group is endeavoring to raise the $600 in tuition needed.

Goddess Mommies of Calgary is happy to contribute whatever we can through the selling of books donated at the book exchanges through a second hand bookshop.

This is an ongoing fundraiser until the end of the year, so feel free to bring any books you would like to contribute to any of the playgroups or Moms nights out. Thank you!

It all started with henna*, and today it comes full circle.

Somewhere between loads of laundry, baking chocolate zucchini cake, looking after my daughter and contemplating picking the apples (nope, didn't get to them)... this blog was born.

The birth of "Goddess Mommies" (of Calgary) followed the birth of my daughter by approximately six weeks. The publishing of this blog, 9 months later.

Having a baby completely changed my life, as I'm sure it did for many of you reading this.

My goal through starting this company is both to connect with other Moms out there, and also to help make the transition easier. I would like to go back to the idea that it takes a village to raise our children, as I believe that we are all connected.

In February of 2006, I brought together a group of my fabulous female friends for our first gathering.

I had felt the need to introduce these amazing and inspiring women to each other, for them to share their gifts and their experiences. We celebrated the divine power of the feminine with wine and henna, and many new friendships blossomed.

Over the years, we have gathered for such various events as clothing exchanges, home spa nights, card readings and even a pole dancing class!

What remains consistent is our playfulness, deep bond and spirit of true sisterhood.

Playgroups Q & A

Could give me some more information about your group? What time do you meet, for how long, do we need to bring anything special, are there any fees to join...etc?

A:

We meet every couple of weeks on a Monday from about 11 - 3. You don't need to bring anything, really- just you & baby! Sometimes people do bring snacks to share, which are always welcome.

There are no fees, except if we have a speaker who charges for their time. So far, we've only had one- a baby sign language teacher, but it turned out to be only $5 each.

Most times it is just an informal social get together, but sometimes we have a theme. For example, March 16th is Homeopathy and Children and April 20th is a Baby Gear exchange.

I usually send a reminder a few days before so if you would like to be on the e-mail list, just let me know.

My goal is to bring like minded Moms & their babies together to share their experiences and just have fun and hang out!

As of Spring 2009 we are meeting at Prema Sai Prenatal @ 1616 20A NW!

My due date came. And it went. And I remained quite nonplussed by it, seeing as most of the research I had done indicated that it was more of a guesstimate kind of date and not something to be written in stone. Give or take two weeks, at some point before the end of the year the baby would surely make its appearance.

It had been a good pregnancy, I enjoyed almost every moment of growing a rounder and rounder belly and the exciting anticipation of finally getting to meet this precious little life 'on the outside'. I had done lots of swimming and acupuncture as preparation and was listening to my relaxing hypnobirthing meditation regularly. The uncomfortableness of the early nausea, later heartburn and constant wearing of the support stockings (wicked veins, you) was really not a big deal in comparison to the miracle that my body was creating.

Christmas came. And it went. I was happy to get to spend it with family and good friends as I thought that I might not have the opportunity to do so, had the baby been 'on time'. Well, I was determined to let it take its time when we found ourselves at the 10-day-overdue-ultrasound-and-check. Baby was well and so was I so off we went on our merry way. Me actually feeling quite relieved as I still had many things to check off on my 'to do' list (as usual). It had been a whirlwind of a year encompassing a wedding, a new house and a company takeover and I was more than happy to have a little extra time to unwind from it all and make those last minute preparations for baby.

As promised, we appeared at the hospital for another check on the 11th day. In waltzed the nurse, clipboard in hand, announcing that we were the next on the induction list. But we weren't here to be induced, I replied with a polite smile. We met with quite some resistance as we attempted to explain our desire to wait for things to happen naturally. But that baby is too big! The placenta will disintegrate! It must come out and soon and by the way, it was quiet on the ward and they could take us now. Who knows what could happen over the weekend if things got busy?

I didn't like where this was headed and asked to see the doctor, as I knew that he or she would have the final say on releasing us and allowing us some time to work on our natural alternatives to bringing the labour on. Ironically, the Doc on call had just returned from China where she studied acupuncture, but was unable to perform any on me due to legal issues with the hospital. As luck would have it, I was able to get my acupuncturist on the line and she had an immediate opening. Reluctantly, they let us leave with the promise of returning the next day for another check.

Feeling much better after my 'poking' session, we headed home with instructions on how to self- administer the correct acupressure points. We also picked up a herbal remedy which was supposed to bring the labour on. A long night followed and in the middle of the next day we received a frantic call from my friend the nurse. Where are we? Why aren't we there yet? Are we refusing to come in? Is that what she should write on the chart? No, I replied as calmly as I could. We will be there – for another check – in an hour or two. Then I hung up and promptly burst into tears. A call to our doula later (who then made a call of her own to the manager of the hospital staff, who was a friend, asking them to kindly back off) and I was in a somewhat calmer state.

In we went, Day 12, still no contractions but getting the green light on the stress test. The Doctor on that day turned out to be a reasonable man who stated his case but respected our right to make our own decision. “I have one trick left up my sleeve” I said as we headed out once again with the promise to let him start the induction process the following day around noon, should I not be able to have the labour start on its own by then. Exit hospital, enter pharmacy.

After a quick online research session I prepare the first dose of Caster Oil... mixed with chocolate ice cream and protein powder to help it go down. The second dose was taken two hours later and about an hour later the contractions started like clockwork. The following six hours which passed at home were a combination of excitement and agony. A walk around the block was taken, with stops now and then for a contraction to come and go. My husband was sent to bed, with orders to get some rest before the big task of being a co-coach (along with our doula). We had been in close phone contact over the past couple of days and at the time of the last call she had advised me to wait it out as long as I could before heading to the hospital.

Cocooning myself in my yellow meditation room, I rock through the next several hours, mostly leaning on my big exercise ball on my knees and working through some breathing exercises. I draw an angel card and begin a vision board to welcome my child into the world. There is a large basket full of paperwork which had been waiting to be filed which I decide isn't so important after all. That was the last item on 'the list'. I come to terms with the fact that it's never going to be all done, that it's really a big ongoing process called life. And I am focused on bringing this life within me into the world. And soon.

The time comes when I decide I would like to head to the hospital. The contractions have become so intense that I can't imagine experiencing any stronger ones in the car on the way. Indeed, I am almost three centimeters dilated by the time we are seen in triage and assigned to a labour & delivery room. The next few hours passed in a blur of pain, breathing, being thankful for my support people and for the laughing gas, which is taking the edge off the contractions, if only momentarily. With some gentle coaxing, I am in and out of the shower twice and then am overcome by the intense need to push.

Not yet! I am advised by the labour nurse and my doula. It seems the baby's head hasn't quite passed through the cervix yet, quite like a turtleneck going over your head, they explain. They also attempt to explain the need for me to bring the pitch of my moans down a few octaves, in order to assist my body with birthing. It takes a while for me to understand and implement this, but I eventually do. And it does help the progression of things... then all of the sudden I AM allowed to push, and I do. And I push and push and push some more.

The Doctor has been around once or twice by now and I understand that we're nearing the end when he takes his position at the end of the bed and joins in on the encouraging chorus. You can do it! You're almost there! I reach down and feel baby's hair. It is both surreal and so real at the same time, I am deeply in my 'maternityland' trance-like state and yet I am present as never before. Two last big pushes and... the baby is here!!!

The nurse had explained to me a little earlier (in between contractions) that they weren't going to be able to give me the baby immediately as I had indicated on the birth plan. It had swallowed some meconium and needed to be suctioned and checked over by a team of nurses first. So I was prepared to have to wait a few minutes before getting to hold my precious bundle. However, I was not prepared for those few minutes to feel like hours!! I look over and see the flurry of activity surrounding the heat lamp to the right of me. Reaching my arm out to my husband, I ask “boy or girl? Boy or girl?”. It takes him a few moments of looking over the shoulders of the nurses to finally get a clear view.

“Girl!” and I weep with incredulous joy. A girl!

They bring my tiny angel over to me and place her in my waiting arms. I am smiling, radiant, surrounded by so much love and awe. This beautiful little being is all ours to care for and love. I feel more complete than I ever have before in my life.
